Handel would have loved it no doubt: the saxophone with its distinctive, smoky sound and punchy depth. Unfortunately, the two missed each other by about 100 years; the saxophone was first patented in France in 1846. In this program, Handel meets the instrument at least musically, with works that he and his contemporaries wrote for oboe, bassoon or voice.

Lutz Koppetsch carries all these timbres over to the saxophone: the ARD prizewinner and professor at the Musikhochschule Würzburg manages to harness the instrument’s entire sound palette throughout all its registers. The Bavarian Chamber Orchestra Bad Brückenau is no less versatile: it skilfully bridges the gap between baroque dances, concerti grossi and new 20th century interpretations of these forms – expertly moderated by moderated by conductor Johannes Moesus und Lutz Koppetsch.
