Some couples marry without ever having seen each other. Others make do with digital affairs, while still others search for their soulmate for life. The rituals of love vary according to culture and latitude – and these differences have fascinated people for centuries.

The baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau already daydreamed about the love lives of foreign peoples. His ballet opera Les Indes Galantes travels through four countries, featuring a headstrong Inca princess, rival lovers in Persia and a faithful Christian woman. Their stories are told by actor Peter Glass, together with the ensemble NeoBarock, which has adapted Rameau’s opera for its own cast of performers. Another racy perspective on love is provided by the captivating Delirio Amoroso, an extraordinary cantata work from George Frideric Handel’s time in Italy. Here he transforms the amorous madness of a young woman into arias of exaltation.
