Veni Sancte Spiritus

Bremen was not the only city with town musicians during the Middle Ages. At the time, music also thrived in Hamburg, Gdańsk, Wrocław and Magdeburg. These cities belonged to the Hanseatic League, a prosperous association that made northern Germany in particular an international political and trading centre and also greatly vitalized the civic cultural landscape. The towns along the trade routes also benefited: Duderstadt, for example.

The young European Hanse Ensemble renders this wealth of heritage audible by performing works by historical Hanseatic composers such as Andreas Hakenberger and Thomas Selle. The title “Veni Sancte Spiritus” is not only a reference to the upcoming feast of Pentecost, but also a symbol of this young formation, which comprises talented young musicians from all over Europe.
