St. Nicolai-Kirche, Herzberg am Harz

Church music is a very important part of life in the Southwest Harz region of Germany. Here, people of all ages sing together in a variety of choirs under the direction of Jörg Ehrenfeuchter as the District Cantor. The Handel Festival brings together the Herzberg/ Osterode Youth Choir, reinforced by members of the Herzberg Chamber Choir, with the Anacronía Ensemble. The Spanish ensemble was named after the “anachronisms” of music history, the transitional moments when musical languages meet and evolve.

Johann Sebastian Bach brings together the musical traditions of his time and points to the future. His five-part motet Jesu, meine Freude combines emotionally gripping choruses with light solo passages. The four-voice chorus Gute Nacht, o Wesen is a particular gem. Gentle and swaying, it transports the listener into dreamy spheres.

Works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Händel, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Christian Bach and Carl Friedrich Abel
