Gentle Dialogue
Tones like a summer breeze: when Liane Sadler plays her transverse flute, a Mediterranean warmth fills the room with a sound that, despite its intimacy, is both invigorating and revitalising. She is accompanied on the lute by Elias Conrad, a musician as virtuosic as he is sensitive, who won the göttingen händel competition in 2021 with the Ensemble Mozaïque. They are the ideal interpreters for the works of Maddalena Casulana, the most successful female singer of the 16th century.
Casulana defied the prejudices of her time that music was the domain of men by proving otherwise to the nobility and the clergy: she dazzled the public with bold harmonies on the lute and enchanted them with her “divine voice”, according to contemporary witnesses. Liane Sadler and Elias Conrad transform Casulana’s madrigals into a gentle dialogue without words.
Works by Maddalena Casulana, Cipriano de Rore, Giorgio Mainerio and Orlando di Lasso
