Symposium

Fascination with the Other

Power and Glory

The preoccupation with other cultures is as relevant today as it was in the 18th century. The nascent British Empire asserted its claim to universal power through war and diplomacy, and also found expression in artistic representations. As the young Britain expanded, so did its fascination with all things foreign, including the Ottoman Empire, the so-called ‘Orient’, and visions of other cultures. Handel was no exception, using various genres such as opera and oratorio to reflect the negotiation of power and glory – for example in Tamerlano HWV 18 (1724) or Solomon HWV 67 (1749).

In this context, the symposium will examine the background of hegemonic endeavors, decipher the associated symbols, and shed light on the role of
an artistic debate around Handel.
