Geschwungen wie eine Schlange, windet sich die hölzerne Röhre des Serpents von Mundstück zu Schalltrichter. Oberkörpergroß! Während er dem Reptil in Form und Namen sehr nahekommt, hat der Klang des Serpents jedoch nichts mit einem giftigen Zischen gemein. Vielmehr raunt er wohlig im tiefen Register, sein rauchiger Klang streichelt die Ohren. Der französische Musiker Michel Godard gilt als Serpent-Beschwörer. Er entlockt dem Instrument lieblichste Laute, lässt es glucksen und singen, flöten und hauchen. Gemeinsam mit einem Ensemble, das in Barock wie Jazz heimisch ist, widmet er sich Musik, die golden glänzt: „Light the Earth“ heißt das Programm, in dem Godard melancholische Arien von Georg Friedrich Händel mit eigenen Werken verbindet. Darin hallen die barocken Töne nach: Basslinien oder Melodien Alter Musik hüllt Godard in leuchtende Klanggewänder. Who thought up this instrument? While it closely resembles the reptile in shape and name, the sound of the serpent has nothing in common with a venomous hiss. In fact, it pleasantly murmurs along in the lower register, its smoky sound soothing on the ears. The French musician Michel Godard is renowned as a serpent conjuror. He elicits the sweetest of sounds from the instrument, makes it coo and sing, whistle and whisper. Together with an ensemble that is at home in both baroque and jazz, he devotes himself to music that glitters like gold: “Light the Earth” is the name of the program in which Godard juxtaposes melancholic arias by George Frideric Handel with his own works.
